4. Do you know what your national tree is? Celebrate National Arbor
Day, April 29!
On national arbor day, the last Friday in April (April 29th
this year), we celebrate the myriad benefits that trees bring us. States
have their own arbor days as well (California’s arbor week was March
7-14).
Check out the Arbor Day Foundation website (http://www.arborday.org/index.cfm),
join in your local events, and keep promoting the use of urban forestry
as a way to build community, clean our air, protect our water, and more!
And for those wondering about national tree: here in the US it is the
oak!
5. Funding – EPA Environmental Education Grant applications due May 2
Education gets to the heart of the matter – working with community
members and leaders to understand the benefits that investing in urban
greening brings to our communities. The Environmental Protection Agency
offers grants to help people make informed decisions about the
environment. This could be a great resource for your organization!
Applications are due May 2. Additional information is available here: http://www.epa.gov/enviroed/grants.html
6. Research - What kills young street trees?
A recent research project looks at the many factors that influence young
tree mortality. Traffic, building developments and social factors can all
threaten young trees, and this study seeks
to understand how social, biological and urban design factors affect the
mortality rates of newly planted street trees.
A summary, with a link to the full research paper, is available through
the Alliance for Community Trees: http://actrees.org/site/resources/research/biological_social_and_urban_design_factors_af.php?tag=news
7. Beware of tree scammers! Stick with certified tree care professionals
When storms pass and damaged trees need care, you may encounter
individuals or companies offering to trim or remove a tree. Please do
yourself and the trees a favor and make sure that the trees are getting
the knowledgeable care that they deserve!
Certified arborists and urban foresters have gone through testing and
ongoing training to stay up to date on how to care for trees properly,
keeping the long-term health of the tree in mind. We recommend checking
to make sure that tree service companies are certified arborists and/or
urban foresters – well cared for trees will bring benefits for
generations to come!

engineers, planners, elected officials, arborists, community leaders and
interested parties together to learn more about cost-effective solutions
that integrate trees and green spaces with air quality and stormwater
management, energy conservation, economic revitalization, walkable
streets, and much more. The workshop will also highlight innovative
projects in the San Joaquin Valley and Sacramento region. State
